Narrated Anas:
The people mentioned the fire and the bell (they suggested
those as signals to indicate the starting of prayers), and by
that they mentioned the Jews and the Christians. Then Bilal
was ordered to pronounce Adhan for the prayer by saying its
wordings twice, and for the Iqama (the call for the actual
standing for the prayers in rows) by saying its wordings once.
(Iqama is pronounced when the people are ready for the
prayer).

Narrated Ibn `Umar: When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they
used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time
for it. During those days, the practice of Adhan for the
prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this
problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested
the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a
trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but `Umar was the
first to suggest that a man should call (the people) for the
prayer; so Allah's Apostle ordered Bilal to get up and
pronounce the Adhan for prayers. Bukhari 1/577.
Narrated Ibn Shihab: Once `Umar bin `Abdul `Aziz delayed the
prayer and `Urwa bin Az−Zubair went to him and said, "Once in
'Iraq, Al−Mughira bin Shu`ba delayed his prayers and Abi
Mas`ud Al−Ansari went to him and said, 'O Mughira! What is
this? Don't you know that once Gabriel came and offered the
prayer (Fajr prayer) and Allah's Apostle prayed too, then he
prayed again (Zuhr prayer) and so did Allah's Apostle and
again he prayed (`Asr prayers and Allah's Apostle did the
same; again he prayed (Maghrib−prayer) and so did Allah's
Apostle and again prayed (`Isha prayer) and so did Allah's
Apostle and (Gabriel) said, 'I was ordered to do so (to
demonstrate the prayers prescribed to you)?'" `Umar (bin
`Abdul `Aziz) said to `Urwa, "Be sure of what you Say. Did
Gabriel lead Allah's Apostle at the stated times of the
prayers?" `Urwa replied, "Bashir bin Abi Mas`ud narrated like
this on the authority of his father." `Urwa added, "Aisha told
me that Allah's Apostle used to pray `Asr prayer when the
sunshine was still inside her residence (during the early time
of `Asr). Bukhari 1.501:
Narrated Abu Dhar: Allah's Apostle said, "While I was at Mecca
the roof of my house was opened and Gabriel descended, opened
my chest, and washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a
golden tray full of wisdom and faith and having poured its
contents into my chest, he closed it. Then he took my hand and
ascended with me to the nearest heaven, when I reached the
nearest heaven, Gabriel said to the gatekeeper of the heaven,
'Open (the gate).' The gatekeeper asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel
answered: 'Gabriel.' He asked, 'Is there anyone with you?'
Gabriel replied, 'Yes, Muhammad I is with me.' He asked, 'Has
he been called?' Gabriel said, 'Yes.' So the gate was opened
and we went over the nearest heaven and there we saw a man
sitting with some people on his right and some on his left. Continue reading 

Let us examine closely the square-structured Ka’bah (The Holy House) at Makkah, in Arabia, wherein in its Eastern corner lies the Black Stone set up chest-high. Every pilgrim in Makkah tries to kiss and caress it fondly, the first thing upon arrival there. This action marks the start of the act of Tawaf. The word “Tawaf” is an arabic infinitive noun which means to circle, compass or move around something. A pilgrim has to circle the Ka’bah seven times, to complete Tawaf. Each one of the seven rounds begins by kissing or caressing if possible, or by simply pointing at the Black Stone. The Black Stone thus, serves to mark the start of each round. Tawaf is one of the integral parts of Pilgrimage (Hajj), which is also performed, as a separate act of worship at any time. Thus we find the Ka’bah continually being circled by people day and night. There are three forms of Hajj: T a m a t t u ' - I f r a a d - Q i r a n
T ama t t u ' : A pilgrim wears Ihram for Umrah only during the months of
Hajj, which means when a pilgrim reaches Makkah, he/she makes Tawaf
and Sa'yi for Umrah. Then shaves or clips the hair. On the day of
Tarwiya, which is the eighth of Dhul-Hijja, a pilgrim puts on his Ihram for
Hajj only and carries out all of its requirements.
Ifraad: A pilgrim wears Ihram for Hajj only. When he reaches Makkah,
he performs Tawaf for his arrival and Sa'yi for Hajj. He doesn't shave or
clip- his hair as he doesn't disengage from Ihram. Instead, he remains in
Ihram till after he stones Jamrah Al-Aqaba on the Eid day. It is permissible
for him to postpone his Sa'yi for Hajj until after his Tawaf for Hajj.
Qi ran: A pilgrim wears Ihram for both Umrah and Hajj or he wears
Ihram first for Umrah, then makes intentions for Hajj before his Tawaf for
Hajj. The obligations on one performing Ifraad are the same as those on
one performing Qiran, except that the latter must slaughter whereas the
former is not obligated to do so. The best of the three forms is Tamattu'. It
is the form that the prophet-may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon

It is quite interesting for me to receive a question about Islam’s view on death from someone who is not of the Islamic faith. For those who are not familiar with the teachings of Islam, we should perhaps cover a few basics before attempting to answer this most honest and in depth question.  Continue reading

Question: I am an employee at a bank, so is it permissible for me to perform Hajj from my earnings?

Response: Working in a bank which deals with ribaa is not permissible.

This is because it is assisting in sin and evil. And also, the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) cursed the one who ate/benefitted (aakil) from ribaa, as well as the one responsible (for the transactions), the witnesses (to the transactions) and the one who writes (the transactions).

Therefore, the employee in reality is assisting the bank, even if he is just a (bank) clerk. So he is cursed according to the text of the hadeeth. Based upon this, the wage he earns is haraam, and it is not permissible for him to eat/benefit from it and nor to perform Hajj with it. This is because the (performance of) Hajj requires pure/good earnings from halaal (sources), however, if he has (already) performed Hajj, then his Hajj is correct/sound but with sin (attached to it, i.e. lesser in reward).

Question: A Muslim wanted to perform the obligatory Hajj whilst having an (outstanding) loan, so if he were to seek permission from the loaners and they permitted him to perform the Hajj, would his Hajj be acceptable?

Response: If the situation is as you have mentioned, with the permission of the loaners to perform Hajj before completing payment (of the loan), then there is no problem in performing the Hajj before completing the payment (of the loan). And there is no affect (upon the Hajj) for being a borrower from them in such a situation.

And with Allaah lies all the success, and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.

Question: What is the ruling regarding someone who performed Hajj with money which was haram, i.e. from the profits of selling (illegal) drugs. Then sending tickets for Hajj to his parents and they perform Hajj, knowing that this money has been gathered from the sale of (illegal) drugs. Is this Hajj acceptable or not?

Response: The performance of Hajj with money which is haram does not prevent the Hajj from being correct, but with sin in accordance with the haram profits and a reduction in the reward for the Hajj. But it does not invalidate it.

And with Allaah lies all the success, and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.
